ID cities, counties band together on energy efficiency
It may be just a drop in an increasingly big energy efficiency bucket, but a recently-awarded $700,000 grant to seven central Idaho communities to launch audit and retrofit programs is significant nonetheless. It shows that smart energy efficiency policy is becoming a strategic regional priority outside of the Northwest’s urban centers.
Blaine and Camas counties and the municipalities of Hailey, Bellevue, Sun Valley, Ketchum and Fairfield teamed up for the grant from the Idaho Office of Energy Resources, which will be used to audit public buildings, boost energy efficiency education, install LED traffic signals and start a residential rebate program. In addition, some of the money will go toward creation of a regional energy efficiency and conservation policy.
That may be the most exciting part of the story.
